Short Story

Truck driver Sujit would have traveled the road of life like his truck, without a care, without feeling and without attachment, but for the one turn he just couldn't negotiate - A poor peasant was killed under the wheels of his truck leaving behind his widow, two small children, a crippled father, a blind mother, and an unmarried sister.
Magistrate Indernath could have sentenced a death penalty for Sujit for driving under the influence of alcohol and manslaughter. But Ramdin's widow, Malti set him thinking by saying, "when you convict the killer please pass the sentence of death on my family too, as death may be more merciful then life without our only bread earner". Upon this the magistrate thought "am I here to meet out punishment to the wrong doers, or to meet the ends of justice. How is the term of prison for Sujit going to help the destitute?"
Sujit found himself a prisoner. His prison was now Ramdin's house and his penance was the destitute family's welfare. The atmosphere pervaded of hatred all around Sujit was suffocating. Would Sujit go through this punishment? Would his devotion pierce through the mist of hearted? Would he find himself a changed soul? Would the magistrate see a human being emerge from beneath the hard crust of the drunken killer?
Indernath's stand was more then vindicated when he found Sujit at his feet, at the end of his term, begging for the term of imprisonment to be enhanced.
